Dressed to Entertain: Backyard Barbecue

Backyard Barbecue | Perpetually Chic for Channeling Contessa

Ahhh, summer. That season of abundant sunshine, meals prepared on the grill, and weekend evenings sitting outdoors watching the sun set. It’s simply my favorite…isn’t it yours? Lauren here, and with summer barbecue season kicking into high gear, I thought I’d drop in to show you how to dress the part. A backyard barbecue is inherently a casual affair—invite friends over, grill up some delicious food, play a few lawn games while you wait, and hang around outside until the sun goes down. But casual doesn’t mean short on style!

Casual does mean comfortable, which is why I lean toward sundresses or shorts paired with cute tops. You can’t go wrong with a goes-with-anything pair of white shorts, and I love the floral pattern of this boxy Madewell tee. Gosh, the last time I had a pair of white sandals, I must’ve been in preschool. In fact, that pair had straps across the toes and around the ankles just like my grown-up version! I love that these have a little block heel for some height, yet still strike that casual summer feel (and won’t get stuck in the grass).

Burgers and BBQ are great for backyard get-togethers, but I honestly start to get a little bit sick of those old standbys. That’s where grilled pizzas come in! From this Peach & Gorgonzola Chicken Pizza to the Smoked Chicken Pizza with Poblano Pepper Sauce we made this past weekend, I love getting creative with the toppings. Another favorite: pesto with shrimp, feta and pine nuts. Serve up a few options on cutting boards, and let guests try different slices. Another approach is to make personal-sized pizzas, and let each guest choose from various toppings.

This tee has a bonus—a peekaboo back to let in the breeze.

For dessert? Keep it simple and grill fresh peaches and plums, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and brown sugar, and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The perfect ending to a stress-free night!

Summer Essentials: The Little White Dress

dress1

What comes to mind when you think of summer essentials? I think of sunglasses, a great pair of flat brown leather sandals, and maybe a pair of distressed jeans. (See also: the perfectly accessorized ice cream cone.) However, I’ve recently realized that I need to add a versatile white dress to that list. They make for the perfect day-to-night outfit, and can be as dressy or as casual as you like.

I went shopping over Memorial Day weekend, and found this lovely number. It happily came home with me after I realized it was on sale. It’s since sold out, unfortunately, but as soon as I tried it on, I knew it was a piece my closet was missing. For a more casual option — which I would likely live in — I’ll be adding that Emerson Fry t-shirt dress to my wish list! It’s perfection.

Flats. They are one hundred percent my thing. Sometimes I have visions of myself rocking a great pair of heels but it’s totally just… a vision. I like a wedge here or there but when you’re 5′ 9″, I much prefer a flat. And I pretty much want every single one J.Crew has right now. How gorgeous are these guys? I’ve currently got a rewards card burning a hole in my pocket and it’s no doubt going to number four, though I have a sneaking suspicion number five… and one… ok and maybe six is going to make its way into my cart, too! Which ones are you guys loving? Any other must have flats?

Setting the Table: Summer Tomatoes

Like many of you, I just can’t get enough of summer tomatoes. Luckily enough, they like to stick around for a while. I get so excited when I first see them early in the season, that I only eat them raw. A sliced tomato is close to perfection, after all. Now that it’s getting cooler though, I love to start cooking with them. This Three Cheese Tomato Tart is definitely on my list. I love the idea of an end-of-summer meal celebrating my favorite summer vegetable, and the hardest part about planning a menu will be narrowing down the dishes! What is your favorite thing to do with tomatoes?

More Pics from the Cape & A Vacation ‘Aha’ Moment

Before I left for the beach, I was feeling really guilty for taking a vacation. I felt like there was work on my business that I should have already completed, and that I really didn’t deserve the time away. But at the same time, I was also feeling pretty meh about work. I wasn’t  as clear about the direction of things or what I wanted, and the thought of figuring it all out just made me want to take a big nap.

But we’d booked a house and had to go. And I mean, I was excited. I wasn’t exactly kicking and screaming at the thought of spending the week at the beach. Once we were there, my thoughts about work started to subside, but I couldn’t shake this feeling that there was something I was supposed to be doing.

One day, after only a day or two away, I noticed something. I was picking up ice cream for my mom and I, and as we sat in the car eating I was overcome with this wave of anxiety. It was so intense- I could feel a lump forming in my throat and knots in my stomach. I had no idea where it was coming from. I ran through my laundry list of concerns. Work, clients, deadlines, bills, blog- everything was in check. Ok…but the feeling didn’t fade. Was it something in my personal life? This was getting ridiculous. I was healthy, had a loving and healthy family, was in a wonderful relationship, lived in a beautiful apartment…. what was I so anxious about?

Nothing. There was nothing to be anxious about. But I was unconsciously telling myself there was- and I was doing it all the time. I was operating in this constant state of feeling like I was either forgetting something or never doing enough. My inner monologue was something along the lines “You chose to work for yourself, therefore there is always something to do. You should be working all the time to make sure your business is successful- otherwise, you’ll fail.” Yikes. Really?

Once I realized what I was thinking I became kind of enraged. Why was I doing that to myself? What a waste of energy! Talk about unproductive! Then two key thoughts popped into my head: 1) If I was feeling this way on vacation, what havoc was this mental habit reeking on my everyday life? and 2) Everything I was feeling felt like a backwards way for punishing myself- like I wasn’t allowed to have any fun or go away until my business had succeeded. But what did that even mean? I’d set goals and accomplished them. I’d experienced success, but I never really gave myself credit for it. The whole thing had my mind spinning. I didn’t really have a solution but I knew I had to kick this negative habit.

That experience alone allowed me to pretty much shut my mind off completely about work for the rest of the trip. My mind lingered over ways to make improvements or changes to stop these negative feelings, but I didn’t want to dwell on it too much. I wanted to figure it out when I got back after my head had a chance to clear.

So that’s what I did. And boy did the time away make the changes I needed to implement clear as day. I’ll be sharing what I realized and what I’m changing next week. In the mean time, have you ever caught yourself in a negative thought cycle? If so, how’d you get yourself out of it? I’d love to hear any tips you have!

Ps: I’ve put all the Cape photos and photos from our Rooftop Dinner Party in albums on the CC Facebook- makes them super easy to browse!

Snapshots from Cape Cod

I’d love to share some vacation pics, if you’d like to see! My mom and I spent last week at the Cape for a little mother daughter vacay. We specifically went to Provincetown, which is waaayyy at the tip of Cape Cod. We visited many beaches when I was growing up but we frequented Provincetown the most, so I knew that was where we had to go for our beach getaway.

The best part about Cape Cod is that the entire seashore is considered a national park, so there are no big hotels, busy boardwalks, or houses. It’s just untouched sparkling beaches with big dunes that make you feel completely tucked away from the rest of the world.

We fell into a wonderful vacation schedule of leisurely breakfasts of hot coffee and poached eggs over buttery toast or steel cut oats with blueberries.

We’d head to the beach around 10 a.m. and pack a lunch of sliced canteloupe, salami and Manchego cheese sandwiches, and salt and vinegar chips (yum!).

We took naps, read, and took long walks on the beach where we spotted seals and whales offshore.

Most nights we’d pick up local seafood to make dinner and then crawl into bed around 10 pm… heaven.

But some nights we strolled around town and indulged in lobster rolls, fried clams, and of course ice cream. My favorite flavor was salted caramel chocolate pretzel. To die for.

One night we had dinner at The Red Inn. Doesn’t my mom look so glam in her sunnies??

We had rain one morning but it was kind of nice, as I needed a little break from the sun. We took a walk along the bay and came across this darling boat.

The trip was so relaxing and so what I needed. I’ll share a few more pics on Friday as well as a few aha moments I had during the trip… in the mean time I’ll be brainstorming ways to teleport myself back to the beach.

Did you go to the beach this summer? Are you itching to live by the ocean? I seriously think I need to make it happen!

Labor Day Recipe Roundup

Hi guys! I’m back from the beach and feeling incredibly rested and excited to be rocking a nice beachy glow. I’ll be sharing photos from the trip later this week but in the mean time, wanted to pull together a few recipe ideas for you for Labor Day. I mean, it’s all about the eating, isn’t it?

Hosting a brunch? I’d definitely make some of Ina’s Blueberry Coffee Cake, paired with this Asparagus and Shiitake Mushroom Quiche, and washed down with my killer iced coffee. Yum!

Having friends for a midday feast? Your guests will go gaga for these spicy Fried Green Tomato BLTs. You could make mini ones and then serve them alongside a pile of these Summer Squash and Feta Cakes (you can make them ahead!). Serve a salad of mixed greens with my irresistible Balsamic Vinaigrette, and polish off the meal with some Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Hosting an afternoon or evening BBQ? These Buttermilk Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches would be insane on the grill. Serve this Roasted Tomato Panzanella on the side and round out the meal with some Oreo Lover’s Cookies and Cream Ice Cream or Brown Butter Rice Crispy Treats if you’re without an ice cream maker.

Enjoy the long weekend guys, see you on Tuesday! xx Clara

Setting the Table: Garden Brunch

This past weekend, the fact that fall is coming finally hit me. The cool breezes, extra leaves on the ground, and even tiniest hint of color are all too much to ignore. Don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you to embrace the changing seasons. If anything, I’m all for doing the opposite. It’s my first year not heading back to school at the end of August, which conveniently makes it that much easier to blissfully disregard what the calendar is implying. So, go on and start planning your next outdoor party, and cross a few more items off your summer bucket list, while you’re at it.

I love that brunch is the perfect low-stress way to entertain, and it comes with the best food and drinks. A dutch baby pancake with orange sugar is easy and impressive- all you need in a brunch dish. Grapefruit cocktails extend the citrus theme, and are a touch more original than the predictable mimosa. At least you can pretend that you’re dining in the middle of an orange grove.

Three Summer Mocktails and Cocktails!

When The Evergirl asked me last month for food feature topics for August, my mind immediately went to homemade summer beverages. I rarely drink regular soda, but love when I’m at a restaurant and there’s a zesty homemade soda. So I set out to create three homemade sodas and sparkling beverages.  That translated into a Sweet & Sour Peach Spritzer, a zesty Homemade Lemon Lime Soda, and a Rosé Sparkler. Yeah- this is gonna be good. You can hop over to The Evergirl to get the recipes for the Lemon Lime Soda and Rosé Sparkler. I’m gonna give ya the back story on this peach spritzer.

Back in July, Brandon and I got dinner at Pok Pok Wing (think Southeast Asian pub food). When we were ordering a noticed a handful of drinking vinegars on the menu. As someone who can’t resist a sweet and sour combo (never give me a bag of Sour Patch kids), I was seriously intrigued. We got the pomegranate one. It was amazing. I was determined to recreate the drink at home.

After a little research, I discovered that making drinking vinegars requires soaking fruit in rice wine vinegar for three to five days. This creates a syrup which you then add a bit of sugar and seltzer to. Simple enough, but I was hoping I could create a drink that didn’t take five days. So I experimented, and a little lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and peach nectar later- we had a winner! I’d still like to make the traditional version, but this recipe is great if you’re short on time and looking for a homemade beverage or cocktail (I’d recommend vodka) to entertain with. Enjoy!

Sweet & Sour Peach Spritzer

Serves 6

  • 2 cups peach nectar
  • 1 bottle sparkling water
  • 3 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 ripe peach, sliced
  • fresh mint for garnish

Fill each glass with 1/3 cup peach nectar, ½ cup sparkling water, ½ a teaspoon lemon juice, and ½ a teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Stir gently, garnish with fresh mint and 2 sliced peaches per glass. Serve immediately. Make it happy hour friendly and add 1 ounce of vodka in each glass!

Weekend in Rocky Point

Hello! And happy Monday. We had such a glorious weekend. On Friday afternoon, we hopped in the car with our friends Nick and Aliza and headed out to Rocky Point Long Island to spend the weekend with another set of friends, Alicia and Ricky. Aliza, Alicia, and I grew up together, and by some miracle have ended up with significant others that have just as much fun hanging out as we do. Does anyone else feel like that can be kind of rare? In any event, the weekend was so fun and exactly what I needed. We went swimming, visited vineyards on the North Fork, and ate and cooked like kings. Freshly shucked oysters, hot cuban sandwiches, and BLT tacos we’re all in the mix. Not to mention all the food we made at home. I have two dishes from the weekend outlined below- super simple recipes for stovetop clams and a zucchini salad. Enjoy!

Ps: Sorry for our lack of Saturday posting this week. We had to make some last minute adjustments but we’ll be back on track this Saturday!

Stovetop Clams courtesy of Alicia
Makes 4 main course servings

  • 2 dozen rock clams, scrubbed and well cleaned
  • zest of 2 lemons
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sea salt
  • 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 2 1/2 quarts water
  • melted better for serving
Pour 2 1/2 quarts water in a large pot and set over medium high heat. If you don’t have a pot big enough to fit all the clams, cook them into two batches.
Add the salt, lemon zest, wine, and garlic to the water and bring to a light boil/ heavy simmer. Layer in the clams until they’re completely submerged, cover, and cook until the shells have opened. Serve immediately with draw butter on the side.
Shaved Zucchini Salad  courtesy of Kate
Makes 6 side servings
  • 3 medium or 2 large zucchini, shaved lengthwise into ribbons
  • juice of half a lemon
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • shaved parm to top
Place the zucchini ribbons in a large bowl. Whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over the zucchini and toss gently. Taste for seasonings and add more salt and lemon juice if it needs a bit more bite. Top with shaved parm. Serve immediately.
